Glad someone is reading the Terms of Service :)

I think you are refering to this line:
"You agree that we may contact you from time to time with surveys or other questions regarding your opinions about and uses of the Archive, as well as with information we believe may be of interest to you. We encourage you to respond to these surveys because we value your input, which will assist us in improving the Archive."

Yes, this allows us to contact those that have accounts. you can drop the account of course.

Where we think we will do right by this (which we have not even done yet), you are right you can get mail from us. I think we did send some email once to a couple of users of the unix machines at the Archive to find out if they were still using the systems-- they did not seem to mind.

I hope your calling it a "parting shot" I hope that does not mean you are leaving...

Yup ... but the only part of that making me cringe was this part:

"...as well as with information we believe may be of interest to you."

The "we believe" part is an incredibly big loophole. Not that I expect the archive to take too much for granted there. But, I was a member of another forum (literary related) with pretty much the same membership requirement ... and just prior to the last Presidential election got an eyeful of political spam from the forum's director. His response when I complained??? He apologized but said he "believed it would be of interest" to me. See what I mean???

{{{I hope your calling it a "parting shot" I hope that does not mean you are leaving...}}}

Nah ... it's just that when I see the "do as I say but not as I do" dichotomy in forum membership agreement statements, I like to point it out (grin).

not to belabor the point when you say:

in our terms of service, we dont want anyone to use the email addresses that can be found in the archive to spam others. we were specifically thining about some that might want to mine the webarchive for email addresses. If you spam us, well, I guess we get what we deserve, and is not disallowed. We are interested in working the patrons of the library, as you can imagine.

so, strickly speaking, I think we are being consistent. but more to the point, we intend to act in a way that most people see as responsible.
